Swift is a moat

Swift is a moat

In our field, speed is often confused with haste. But real speed is not rushing. It shortens the time between an idea and a tangible result.

This speed is one of the most powerful moats a designer, and honestly, any ambitious individual, can build. And to be clear: none of this is an excuse to lower the quality of the work. Quality is the basis. Speed is the added benefit.

An idea just discussed is a ghost. Everyone imagines a different version of it. An idea that has been prototyped becomes reality. It turns into a concrete artifact that travels. It is shared on forums and shown in rooms where you are not. It becomes the center of the conversation. It forces responses, sparks new thoughts, and creates alignment (or exposes the lack thereof) in a way words never can.

The ability to create an idea very quickly is speed. It is also the means by which property is seized. There are no formal invitations to take over. When someone quickly shapes a direction, he or she sets the pace. That act is leadership. And it unlocks huge unexpected benefits: new potential paths, faster alignment, and clearer forward motion.

Working quickly increases your output. The size of your opportunities is growing. Your potential grows. You shorten time and generate more. The world pays attention to results, and fast operators simply produce more of them. More shots on target means more impact and more doors opening.

Momentum attracts opportunities. Organizations are by nature slow, processing, cautious and uncertain. Speed is the energy that fights this obstacle.

If someone is slow, he continues to respond. They feel like a clogged pipe, nothing moves forward, decisions fall by the wayside, and by the time their work is submitted, the problem has tripled. The solution concerns version one of a question that is now in version four.

When someone is fast, they shift from chasing problems to shaping the next question. Fast people operate at the border. They see the shifts as they happen. They catch domino effects. They discover problems that no one expected. They operate at the forefront.

This is the mindset to build. The natural state of any organization is to slow down. Your speed is the opposing force. Fast people are not obsessed with deadlines. They are obsessed with priorities. If anything matters, now is the time. We move.

The canal is fast.
