Former World No. 3 Elina Svitolina has announced that she will end her 2025 tennis season earlier than planned, in which it is explained that she is Not in the right emotional state to continue to compete. The Ukrainian star shared her thoughts about InstagramBeing open about the mental and emotional challenges that she is confronted with.
“I didn’t feel like myself lately,” Svitolina admitted. “I am not in the right emotional space and I don’t feel ready to play, so I end the season here.”
Svitolina emphasized that, for her, tennis never about money, fame or rankings – it was always about giving her full effort and being ready to fight in court. At this point in her career, she said, she acknowledges that it penetrates when she is not mentally or emotionally prepared, not allowing her to perform her best.
She added that it does not have to be strong or productive every day, and acknowledges the importance of letting itself rest and cure. “Some days are heavy – and that doesn’t make me weak. It just means I’m human and need time to rest, feel, breathe and just be,” she wrote.
Now ranked world no. 13, the 31-year-old star made it clear that her decision is not permanent, but a step back to prioritize her well-being. “So I give myself the space that I need to heal and charge, instead of forcing it and when I have a step back on the field, I want to fight with everything I have and my best on the field for the fans, for the game and for myself,” said the athlete looking for the circuit while she cancel her daughter three years old.
Despite her early end of the season, Svitolina had a successful year on tour. She put together a 35-14 record and lifted a trophy in Rouen, France, where she won the WTA 250 Clay event in April. She also reached the quarterfinals at both the Australian Open and Roland Garros.
However, her summer results took a recession. After she went on to the quarterfinals in Montreal, she lost her opening matches in Cincinnati and at the US Open. After her defeat in Montreal against Naomi Osaka, she also spoke about the negative impact of online abuse of angry gamblers, which is an increasingly common issue for professional players.
Last week Svitolina represented Ukraine on the Billie Jean King Cup in China, so her country helped the semi -final before she fell to Italy.
Svitolina is not the only player who leaves this season due to the requirements of the sport. Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia recently also announced that she would close her year early to recover and charge.
