The former US Women’s National Team (USWNT) manager led Switzerland to the last eight of the 2025 European Championships on home soil – the first time the Swiss had reached the knockout rounds – and was set to take charge of the 2027 Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign.
However, the SFV has decided not to renew its contract, with Sundhage informed of the governing body’s decision at a face-to-face meeting in the Swedish capital Stockholm.
“I would have loved to continue this journey,” Sundhage said in a statement after the meeting. “I am surprised by the [federation’s] decision, but I respect it.”
SVF chairman Peter Knäbel said: “Together with the players and staff, she laid the foundation for a promising future in Swiss women’s football.”
In October, ahead of the friendlies with Canada and Scotland, Sundhage expressed her desire to sign a new contract with one condition: the SVF would employ a full-time assistant.
In a statement, SVF women’s football director Marion Daube said: “The decision and changes are based on the strategy and development process.
“It is time to provide new impetus with adapted structures and to consistently implement the 2026-2030 strategy with a clear focus on youth and talent development and an adapted playing philosophy. The new national coach will also play a central role in the field of youth development.”
