India announced the T20 World Cup squad and shocked everyone when Shubman Gill snubbed the team despite expectations that he would be India’s next T20I skipper. Michael Clarke cited his 291 runs in 15 innings as the reason for the criticism, but also claimed it would not affect India’s long-term plans.
Suryakumar Yadav loses Team India captaincy after ICC T20 World Cup
The message from the Indian team management and the BCCI selectors was very clear that this would be Suryakumar Yadav’s last two series before he relinquishes his captaincy for India.

Under Surya’s leadership, India have not lost a single T20I series in the Gambhir era and the New Zealand series will be his last bilateral series as captain of India. Moreover, the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup will be his first and last World Cup appearance with the captain’s armband.
Suryakumar Yadav has had a distinguished career and was a special find for the Indian team in the shortest format of the game. He also won the Asia Cup as captain, in addition to beating the likes of South Africa and Australia on home soil.
Michael Clarke reasons on Shubman Gill’s T20 World Cup snap
The former Australian reasoned that Shubman’s dismissal by Ajit Agarkar was due to his poor form, and the management made it clear that they want a razor-sharp focus on their immediate goal of defending the World Cup title.
“He might still be in contention. I don’t think that changes too much. I think the squads had to be announced by a certain time, and he wasn’t batting as well as he would like. India have so many opening batting options; he’s not the captain of the team at this stage, so I think they’ve pretty much made the decision,” Clarke said, mentioning that India have had plentiful choices in the top order.
“They wanted these few warm-up games to be a real focus on what they’re doing in the World Cup. There were questions about his form. They made that decision specifically in the run-up to the World Cup,” Clarke said on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast.
As Suryakumar Yadav’s form eludes him from further opportunities to play in the Indian team, he would not be retained as captain, and therefore, this makes Shubman Gill’s case stronger in front of the BCCI selectors and the Indian management.
Clarke is backing Shubman Gill to take over the captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav
The former World Cup-winning Australian skipper pointed out that Shubman Gill will not only be back in the India T20I team but will also be the next captain after Suryakumar Yadav is relieved from his role.
Another central reason for his belief was India’s long-standing priority of having one captain in all three formats of the game. A trend that started with MS Dhoni and was smoothly passed on to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Ideally, Gill, as Test and ODI captain, should be the next T20I captain, according to this story.
“After the World Cup, I don’t think you should be surprised if he not only comes back into the team but also takes over the captaincy. He is an incredible player who is just not playing his best cricket at the moment. I don’t think there are too many concerns about Shubman Gill’s future. India have made it clear that we are 100 per cent focused on this World Cup and we want to win it,” he said.
