We are now less than two months to the NBA season, and the excitement is starting to build for fans because there are now schedules. While the Minnesota Timberwolves consider which last-minute additions they want to do to their selection, I believe they would wisely consider to pick up Russell Westbrook.
Be patient before you call me names to suggest this. I am not saying that Westbrook represents some kind of large solution that will change everything for this Timberwolves team. But although the interest in him competition is clearly low, it could be worth making a swing on the former MVP in what would be a fairly low risk.
The last years of Westbrook’s career have been interesting. After his time at the Los Angeles Lakers there was a certain story to make it look like Westbrook had been completely washed and could no longer play in the NBA. I think what he has done since then has certainly been enough to refute those claims.
But at the same time, Russ is still in an interesting place where he clearly needs a specific scenario to thrive. He got that situation with the Nuggets, because he looked excellent for a large part of the year and played Nikola Jokic.
Westbrook is a risk that the Timberwolves should take
So although he was good in Denver, it probably also says something that the Nuggets Westbrook did not want to sign again. That will make a lot of fans nervous, but I think there are a few factors here that can make it a valuable swing for Minnesota to take.
Of which the first grid is needed. The wolves have a lack of ball handlers outside the aging Mike Conley and a young largely unproven Rob Dillingham. The rumor has been going on for a while that they might want to bring in another man who can bring the ball to the ground, and Russ is certainly in that category. Not to mention the fact that Westbrook would bring a level of athletics, even at this stage of his career that Conley will not.
Then there is also the low risk, high reward part for this. If the Timberwolves decided that they wanted Russ ink into a one -year -old, minimum deal, there is only so much bad that it can come out realistically. Of course, maybe he does not run out or offers a lot of value, and that would mean that you burned a roster place. But he is not a salary burner in the long term.
In general, I just think this is a risk that you should take if you are Minnesota. It will be September, and if you can’t get Malcolm Brogdon, you might as well take a chance at Russell Westbrook.
