‘Superman’ will flow much earlier than expected

The Superman of James Gunn has proven to be one of the more controversial films of this year, immediately exciting fans about a new life revived DC Cinematic Universe and criticism from fans of Henry Cavill and Zack Snyder and people who just didn’t think it was a very good film.

I didn’t like the movie. Not because I think it was wrong for Gunn to rearrange Superman, please note. I liked Cavill a lot in the role, but I like David Corswet just as much. I think he is a great choice and did a great job. My problems with Superman were all about writing and the direction. Just like Snyder, Gunn has a very clear style. Neither director was the right choice for Superman. You can read my review from Superman for a more in -depth explanation of my complaints.

One of the most important things I ask myself after watching a movie is: “Would I like to see this again?” Sometimes the answer is: “Yes, as soon as possible. I’m going back to the cinema next week!” That’s when I really love a movie, as was the case with the best film of this year, Weapons. More often than not, the answer “Yes, but I’ll wait for it to stream” or “Yes, but I’m waiting for me to get the 4K Blu-ray.”

If that is your answer for SupermanYou are lucky. DC has just announced that the film is coming to HBO Max this Friday, September 19. It has been available on VOD for weeks, but now you can watch for free (despite your HBO Max subscription).

Of course, my answer to that question after looking at Superman was: “No, I don’t think I will look at this again.” In the intervening weeks, however, I decided that I will probably view it again. Not because I thought it was brilliant filmmaking, but because I am curious whether my thoughts will change at all with a second viewing. I doubt it, but you never know. It happened before.

In related news we also know that the sequel to Superman Man of Tomorrow will be mentioned and will be released about two years after the theatrical debut of the first film. It seems that this time Superman works together with rival Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), which means that the next villain should be really frightening. Of course, with a Gunn behind the wheel, I am nervous that this will be just as disappointing as the first film. I love Gunn as a director. I enjoy his show Peacemaker At the moment and the first Guardians of the Galaxy Film remains one of my favorite MCU films. He’s just not the right choice for Superman. Oh well.
