The Phoenix Suns made an unexpected two-part move on Monday when they waived two-way running back CJ Huntley without ever playing a minute of basketball for the team. They quickly followed that up with the addition of Jamaree Bouyea in his place, although his position on the pitch raises more questions than answers.
Suns add another point guard in Bouyea.
The 25-year-old has spent much of the last three seasons in the G League, though he made five appearances for the Milwaukee Bucks last season and also made his only career start for that franchise. Clearly, head coach Jordan Ott believes it is better to have another creator and backcourt operator on standby, and this makes a lot of sense.
The Phoenix Suns are signing guard Jamaree Bouyea to a two-way NBA contract, sources tell ESPN. Bouyea played parts of three NBA years and averaged 20 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in the G League this season.

Devin Booker has been on a tear so far this season, although the absence of Jalen Green has created a role for Isaiah Livers. The fact that he took that opportunity, and that the Suns have a lot of depth at the forward spot with guys like Ryan Dunn, Oso Ighodaro and even Nigel Hayes-Davis, is why Bouyea was chosen over Huntley.
At this point, he’s unlikely to see any more playing time with the Suns, although he’s also an alternative if Collin Gillespie slows down. The back floor general has already exceeded expectations this season, but the regular season is tough and he has slowed down a bit in recent games.
But if there’s one player who should be concerned, it’s Jordan Goodwin. Although he plays more than 16 minutes per game and is the perfect defensive veteran at the guard position, Bouyea’s arrival means his spot is under threat. He doesn’t have anything to worry about at this point, and in fact, he beat out the better competition to make the roster.
Jared Butler was one of the stars of the preseason, but the franchise was instead paired with Goodwin’s steady contributions. It’s hard to know what skill Bouyea can bring that Goodwin can’t, as he’s also currently hitting a career-high of 39.4 percent of his efforts from deep so far this season.
Bouyea has seen about 12 minutes of action during his short career, but that doesn’t match Goodwin. On the other hand, the Suns took a gamble on Gillespie in the same spot and that yielded great results. This is an opportunity to improve again at the margins. All Bouyea needs is the chance to show what he can do.
