The Phoenix Suns are off to a 1-3 start, returning from a three-game road trip in which they failed to record a single win. One of the most glaring weaknesses in their play right now is on defense, with only the Brooklyn Nets able to score more points on a nightly basis. Not how head coach Jordan Ott wanted to start his tenure.
Despite this obvious roster flaw at this point, center Mark Williams has done his part to ensure the Suns grab as many rebounds as possible when he is on the court. That’s partly why they’re around league average in that area (43.5), although Williams hasn’t gotten much help from Royce O’Neale (6.5), the next lockdown player after him.
Suns should avoid James Wiseman anyway.
Although the Suns appear to be quite behind Williams in the center spot, the reality is very different. It doesn’t look like the 23-year-old will be playing in back-to-backs anytime soon, while current starter Oso Ighodaro isn’t even a true big man. It is not without reason that backup Nick Richards only gets spot minutes, while rookie Khaman Maluach hardly sees any action.
We signed guard Mac McClung.
In a further move we have waived center James Wiseman.

But despite all this – and with a roster spot currently open to them – the Suns must avoid James Wiseman at all costs. The former second overall pick was recently cut by the Indiana Pacers and it is unclear if he will get another shot in the league. If he does, it will be because a team is desperate to add size to their front line, and will be hoping they can be the ones to bring Wiseman in.
With the Suns struggling defensively and in a position where they can afford to take a chance on a guy like this, who is still only 24 years old, you’d think they’d be tempted to pick up the phone. That shouldn’t be the case, because they had a guy in Deandre Ayton who also struggled with his motor, and who the Suns were ultimately better off without.
While Wiseman would probably realize he was getting his last chance and thus could hit the ground running, this isn’t the kind of player you want to hand to coach Ott. He needs guys to buy into his defensive schemes, like Dillon Brooks and even Williams have done, even if the results haven’t paid off yet.
