The Phoenix Suns may have taken a blow to landing a top -hand protector this season, but it was not for the lack of trying. Although Jordan Goodwin and Jared Butler will fight it for third place in Phoenix – with Collin Gillespie who occupied the second and Jalen Green to be in the first place – missed the Franchise Marcus Smart.
They made a play for him before he decided to go to the Los Angeles Lakers instead, in what would have been a perfect fit. The Suns quietly build a defensive schedule – and this man is going to help a couple – and Smart would fit exactly, because he looks like he has a point to prove that he was once appointed defending player of the year for a reason for a reason.
Suns ignored Devin Booker’s desire to reunite with Chris Paul.
Another player who apparently could have brought the team into the fold is none other than the 40-year-old Chris Paul. The “Point God” was open to return to Phoenix or LA with the clippers, because both were in the vicinity of his family in Los Angeles. As you probably know, Paul spent a lot of time playing this game.
When Marc Stein Reported on his substit after Paul was revealed by the clippers, Devin Booker was open for the idea of playing with Paul again. The couple led the Suns to the NBA final of 2021 – and as both a real Point Guard and veteran for the young players on the Roster – it will not get better. But apparently the Front Office chose to ignore booker about this, by passing on Paul.
Chris Paul congratulates Devin Booker on becoming The Suns All-Time Leading Scorer:
“You are 30 thousand, 40 you … Who knows. You may put that ball in the bucket. It is an honor and a privilege to say that I was your teammate. I love your husband, love everything you are about.”

This is just the last in a series of bewildering decisions of the organization while they go further from the Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal era. Booker was recently awarded a two -year extension of $ 145 million, which even gives him a player option in the second year to leave if he wants. That didn’t just seem like a reward for a 36 -win season.
But that also indicated that the Suns would do everything they could to make booker happy, which is the right way to play this. But with the team that would not compete next season – and after the last few years need a feel -good story – they chose to entertain booker’s wish to play with Paul again in what is probably his last season. Talk about mixed signals.
Perhaps if the Suns had found a long -term option on the point of this season, you could justify that this does not. But Goodwin or Butler only becomes a stopgap for the following year or so, while Gillespie will be a backup as long as it is in the valley. Fans need something next season to cheer, and the return of Booker and Paul would have been. That shooting is just bizarre.
