The Phoenix Suns may have been hit with injuries to their two best offensive players, Devin Booker and Jalen Green, but we know they aren’t the type of group to complain about bad luck hitting them again.
Instead, they will turn to others to help them until they get back to full strength, and few currently have the opportunity presented to them than Mark Williams to prove that he can be the answer to so many of their problems.
Williams has a chance to prove he’s worth a big extension this season
Getting the former Charlotte Hornet on the field as consistently as the Suns have made it a win to trade for him in the first place, especially since he’s played in a handful of back-to-backs.
But now that Williams is eligible for an extension this offseason, if he can take on an even bigger offensive role, he will ensure he gets the most money the franchise has to offer.
The emergence of Oso Ighodaro has been AWESOME for the Phoenix Suns this season.
However, they need to find a way to better coexist with him and Mark Williams offensively ⬇️ pic.twitter.com/bpMgrdIEQM

Also helping him is the strange place the market is as we approach the deadline. Superstars like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Anthony Davis have joined their current teams, though nothing has yet to happen and this is hampering Phoenix’s ability to make other trades of their own.
Once again, there is a clear need for dominant bigs in the league, while there is a shortage of the kind of players who can impact a winning team. That’s why Bismack Biyombo still has a job in Texas.
Williams should and will get more touches, so it would be nice to see him score 15 points and 10 boards every night. Modest increases on the 12 points and 8.2 boards he has managed so far. You can’t fault him defensively, as the Suns rank seventh (112.1) in defensive rating as he anchors the squad.
It would be fair to say that Williams doesn’t have a consistent attacking game or a go-to move beyond just being a bully but also being a lob threat, but now is the time to change that.
We won’t see him emerge in 90s style, but a little more getting back to the basket and initiating an offensive move himself would go a long way.
Williams will never be an offensive fulcrum for the Suns if everyone is healthy. He’ll get paid this summer one way or another and the Suns should be happy with what they’ve seen from him so far.
But if Collin Gillespie can continue to take advantage of these opportunities to impress when they arise, there’s no reason why a former Duke player with Williams’ physical attributes, who is now healthy, can’t do the same. A huge opportunity.
