The Phoenix Suns are now planning to enter Jalen Green next season as the team’s starting point guard. Green mainly played on shooting guard during his NBA career and before that in the G League Ignite, so this will be a new challenge for him. It will certainly push his skills in new ways, but it is perhaps the best for him in the long term.
Jalen Green has to slow things down
During his time on the rockets, Green was known for an inconsistent game. He sometimes flashed incredible scores, such as a 38 -point eruption against the Warriors in the Play -offs last season. But other times he would be inefficient off the field and be unable to get a consistent source of offense.
The problem of Green is that he tried to force his own offense too aggressively. He often hunted his own shot at the disadvantage of the team’s attack, including settling pull-up jumpers while it would be better for him to drive to the edge or pass it on to someone else. The rockets have never had the best attacking teammates for him, who may have contributed even more to developing bad habits.
Although the suns will probably not be as good as the rockets next season, they may be better suited for Jalen Green. Devin Booker will be a great off-ball threat and give him room to work as a primary ball handler.
Booker has shown the opportunity to play both and next to the ball and make his game over the years, a jump that will hope to replicate Green. Playing Punmacht next to Booker should force Green to slow down his own pace and look for the best shot on every journey along the field, whether for himself or a teammate.
To be a real point guard, Green would have to pick his spots wisely, which can help his efficiency on a lower volume. Adding more of a play element also makes him a more complete and dangerous attacking player who cannot neutralize teams with a simple double team.
In the NBA, Jalen Green attacked the edge at his best and present his highest athletics. Being more selective with his sheet traps and playing a role of the patient point Guard will make him even more effective. Teams will not be able to predict his movement and load it to stop if he has a number of different counters, including passing.
The Suns demand a lot from Jalen Green to play a Point Guard role that he is not used to. The results may not be ideal in the short term and can struggle green. In the long term, however, this is probably exactly what he needs to grow as a player and to take the next step as an all-round guard.
