India walked past England with 6 points in an exciting fifth test on the oval to level the 2-2 series, but the scenes after the game led to a debate.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has criticized the ECB because he did not include Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson in the presentation of the Anderson-Detulkar trophy.
The series, named after the two legends, ended in a draw. Gavaskar said it would have been suitable for both to transfer the trophy to the captains, as both were in England during the game.
“This was the series named after Sachin Tendulkar and Jimmy Anderson. It was expected that they would be present to hand over the trophy to the two skippers since the series ended in a draw. Both were in England. So were they not invited?” Gavaskar wrote in his Sportstar column.
He even pulled parallels with the Border-Gavaskar trophy in Australia, where he was absent in the presentation because Australia won. “Because the series was drawn in England, neither was asked to attend the presentation,” he said.
A tense finish at the oval
Army 374 was England control thanks to centuries of Joe Root and Harry Brook. But Mohammed Siraj turned the game upside down on day 5 and took five wickets. England only needed 35 runs with four more wickets, but India threw them out for 367.
