Sunderland confirm reduced allocation of away tickets for the Newcastle United derby

Sunderland have now officially confirmed that they will receive a reduced allocation of away derby tickets when they play Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

For Premier League matches, away fans are normally allocated a maximum of around 3,200 tickets.

However, Sunderland have now confirmed on Monday that their allocation will be almost 700 fewer tickets.

Before the match against Newcastle United, the Mackems announce the following today: ‘Tickets for Sunderland AFC’s Tyne-Wear derby against Newcastle United next month will go on sale tomorrow (Tuesday) from 12pm GMT. The Black Cats will travel to St. James’ Park on Sunday, March 22, kick-off 12:00 GMT, and have been allocated 2,528 tickets for the Premier League match, including 16 wheelchair spaces.’

The reduced allocations could well become a regular feature in the derbies.

When the match takes place at St James’ Park on March 22, 2026, it will be the first derby between Newcastle United and Sunderland on Tyneside since 2016, with the Mackems having spent so many years in the lower leagues.

Ahead of the December 2025 derby match on Wearside, Newcastle United gave this explanation as to why there would be fewer derby ticket allocations…

‘Given the high-profile nature of the match, Newcastle United carried out a detailed safety assessment, which concluded that balcony seats in the away section of the Leazes Stand would need to be closed for the match at St. James’ Park in March. This measure, intended to support effective segregation and increase fan safety, reduces the number of absentees from 3,200 to 2,528. Sunderland AFC has chosen to match the revised away allocation for Newcastle United supporters attending the match at the Stadium of Light in December.”
