Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris says Marc Guiu’s unexpected recall to Chelsea in the summer illustrates the ‘unpredictable’ nature of the transfer window.
The Spanish forward joined the Black Cats on loan in August but returned to Stamford Bridge towards the end of the month after Liam Delap picked up an injury.
The deal did not contain a recall clause, but the Blues convinced Sunderland to send him back anyway. The two clubs will face each other in the Premier League on Saturday.
Sunderland boss opens up on ‘weird’ Marc Guiu transfer with Chelsea
“Sometimes the market and the life of different clubs and players is a bit strange! We appreciated the short period we had with Marc, but now it’s a different story,” Le Bris said at his pre-match press conference.
“We developed a good relationship with Chelsea and when they had a lot of injuries they decided to call our sports department. They had a conversation and the end of the story was that he went back to Chelsea.”
“The market is the market and sometimes you have to deal with unpredictable situations. We were able to find another solution, but the balance was that if we could find another solution, we could say yes to their request.
“It was possible, so we’re doing well.”

Despite the untimely loss of Guiu, Sunderland have managed to be competitive in the Premier League after a series of smart signings.
“You can’t solve everything with money,” said Le Bris.
“You need money to be competitive on the market, but then you have to develop your own expertise based on the profile you need and the identity you have at the club.
“The recruitment structure worked very well to find these profiles, because the connection went very well early in the season.
“We felt the personalities, the profiles fit very well with what we wanted.”
