Newcastle United and Sunderland have agreed to reduce ticket allocations for away fans at both derbies this season.
The last Premier League derby between the two clubs was almost ten years ago, in 2016.
However, when they meet on December 14, 2025, there will be only 2,528 tickets and no more than 3,000 allocated to Newcastle United fans (well, who knows how many of these will actually be available to NUFC fans…).
Sunderland fans will also only be allocated 2,528 tickets for the return derby at St James’ Park.
Newcastle United official announcement – November 10, 2025:
The Magpies travel to the Stadium of Light on Sunday, December 14 for a first Tyne-Wear derby of the Premier League season – with an away transfer now confirmed.
Newcastle United have been allocated 2,528 away tickets before ticket applications open at 2pm (GMT) on Monday 10 November. Sunderland will be given the same away allocation for the reverse fixture at St. James’ Park in March, following an agreement between the two clubs.
A revised on-sale process has been introduced for the 2025/26 season as a result of consultation with season ticket holders, with over 8,000 fans voting on the away ticket allocation process.
Key ticket sales dates for Sunderland (A) are detailed below:
Phase 1 – Monday November 10 (2 p.m.)
The ticket application is open for all season ticket holders to request a ticket for this match.
Phase 2 – Tuesday, November 11 (2 p.m.)
The ticket request window closes. The club processes all entries and awards tickets in order of loyalty points. A small number of tickets will also be distributed to those who do not meet the loyalty points threshold.
Phase 3 – Wednesday, November 12 (2 p.m.)
Supporters who are successful in the registration process will receive an email on Wednesday, November 12 at 1:00 PM with the opportunity to go online and purchase their ticket(s) for the match. Tickets are sold via a ‘select your own seat’ model, giving fans the flexibility to choose where they sit and who they sit next to – whether it’s friends or family.
This system eliminates the need for tour groups, as supporters can make seat selections directly during the purchase window.
Phase 4 – Friday November 14 (2 p.m.)
Once the purchase period closes for successful applicants, any remaining tickets not yet purchased will be offered to those who have registered for the competition and will fall within the next level of loyalty points – below the point at which the sale was previously made. For example, if a match is sold out at 10 savings points, tickets will be offered to supporters who have requested tickets with 9 savings points.

Tyne-Wear derbies (away matches)
Newcastle United and Sunderland AFC have agreed to match away allocations ahead of this season’s Tyne-Wear derbies.
Given the high-profile nature of the match, Newcastle United carried out a detailed safety assessment, which concluded that balcony seating in the away section of the Leazes Stand should be closed for the match at St. James’ Park in March. This measure, intended to support effective segregation and increase fan safety, reduces the number of absentees from 3,200 to 2,528.
Sunderland AFC have opted to match the revised away allocation for Newcastle United supporters attending the match at the Stadium of Light in December.
