After a good start from thirty meters, trained and ridden gelding Craig Ferguson pushed on to take the lead from Cocktails And Caviar.
“He made a good start today and that was fortunate. With The Big Lebowski behind us we had to try to stay in front of him,” said Ferguson. “He can be a different horse when he finds the front. He travels a little bit better and shifts in.”
With one lap to go, second favorite The Big Lebowski came looking for the lead.
“I gave up at Riverton and felt we should have blown through to win the race. Sometimes he’s just not that good coming off a helmet. I thought we would take our chance today, keep the lead and let him (The Big Lebowski) do the hard work outside of us.”
Ferguson says the most pleasing thing about the win was that the gelding fought hard all the way to the line.

“As everyone knows by now, he’s got a few quirks. He’s overshot to win a few times and let himself down. He had to dig deep today because Tim’s came really hard. But he did exactly that, so I’m very pleased.”
At the end of the 2750 meter endurance test, Wag Star had a head advantage over Cocktail And Caviar.
“He handles it very well. It doesn’t require anything from him.”

Wag Star is owned by Bill and Pauline Bain and Bill and Mary McDowell.

Ferguson says the horse’s next big target is the Wyndham Cup at the end of next month.
“We’re just trying to get points for the Country Cups championship. We’re just taking it week by week at the moment.”
