You will often hear me say in mindfulness and somatic who experience workshops and lectures that much of what I learn the most basic things we already know – drink water, real food eating, getting a considerable peace. The problem? Our society is not built for that. It is built for constant stimulation, non-stop overworking and a culture of ignoring your body until it finally screams for help.
And if you swim in the industrial wellness machine, it is easy to label any pain, foggy thought or wave of exhaustion as a disrupted nervous system. That general diagnosis is often in the direction of a wrongly aligned chakra, or a sign that you need expensive energy healing. But could it really be that you have lived from coffee, skip lunch and scrolls until 2 am?
When I dived in yoga and energy work for the first time in 2006, I also fell for it. Every wave of exhaustion or irritability felt like ‘bad energy’. I thought I needed more meditation, more exercise, more breathing, more everything to repair it. Full Bliss was certainly another ritual away.
After weeks I discovered that I might not need another ritual. I needed a nap.
People come to me all the time that their energy is ‘blocked’. Because they cannot concentrate on meditation and feel anxious and unfounded, they immediately assume that they are spiritually broken. My first question is always: “How do you sleep?” Nine out of 10 times the answer is ‘not much’.
We tend to make self -care more difficult in a production, as if it requires a compound experience, special tools that go beyond we already know and endless time. But your body doesn’t always want something in -depth – sometimes it wants the basis. Real food. Water. Eight hours actually rest and less than eight hours on your phone. Ironically, those elements on entry level can be the most difficult things to honor in a society that is celebrating Burn -Out as if it is an honorary sign.
So yes, meditate. To breathe. Do the yoga. But too? Stop complicating too much what your body already asks you to give it. Sometimes the most holy that you can do is not a ritual at all – it closes your laptop, drinks a glass of water and goes to bed.
