Stolarz returns after a likely handshake in the locker room

2 minutes, 31 seconds Read

Anthony Stolarz’s willingness to rant unfiltered after the game about the Toronto Maple Leafs’ play didn’t last long in Toronto — and it seems the goaltender quickly learned why. After openly advocating defensive lapses, weak backchecking and a lack of physicality, Stolarz has completely reversed course, trading candor for polished ‘team speak’.

Just a few days ago, after being run over for the umpteenth time in his crease, he was blunt:

“I mean, I’m not happy… I’m going to try to stand up for myself… Maybe we can take a page out of their book and get on the internet… Enough is enough, and we need to start picking it up a little bit here.” That wasn’t all he said, noting, “I mean, a lot of guys have been here for a while. Overtime, you can’t let someone hit you out there on the ice and get a clear escape.”

The comments raised eyebrows for their outspokenness and while largely accurate, Stolarz did not shy away from publicly airing his issues. Many felt the netminder was right to feel how he felt, but wondered if he might have gone too far in bringing the issues out from within the locker room.

It is clear that Stolarz regretted it or received a slap on the hand

Perhaps even stranger than the original comments were his follow-up comments, a blatant lie about the team’s play in its loss to the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night. His message could not have been more different:

“It was a really good effort from the guys…I thought the effort was great tonight. The guys were fighting…I thought we did a lot of good things tonight.”

The comments were wildly inaccurate, and that can only mean a few things. He’s trying to limit damage or he’s so sarcastic that he delivers the same message in a completely different way. Regardless, his comments Tuesday night appear to be just as problematic as, if not more so, than his initial comments because they don’t accurately reflect how the team responded.

Former NHL head coach Peter Laviolette may have hinted at why Stolarz pivoted. He talked about bringing insider criticism to a market like Toronto, and how it creates unnecessary noise. Former Leafs goalie Andrew Raycroft echoed the sentimentsuggesting that Stolarz quickly realized the stakes. “It’s hard to be accountable because everyone has to fend for themselves… that stuff lingers in Toronto,” Raycroft said, hinting that the goaltender won’t publicly address anyone again.

What started as a fiery, honest critique has evolved into safe, team-approved comments – classic evidence of a behind-the-scenes handshake. It shows how vulnerable the Maple Leafs can be and that Stolarz may want to take some of the pressure he put on himself to turn out the lights as he held the rest of his team to a public level of accountability.
