Don’t get me wrong. Figma is vastly superior at creating components and design systems – PS just can’t match that. But when it comes to quick layout ideas and trying out different ideas, I still find PS much more flexible/powerful. These are my main pain points:
- You can’t just grab a text box and resize it freely (you have to enter the font size numerically).
- PS layer effects are very powerful. Want to try a different color on some items? Select them, group them and apply a layer style
- PS-AI copy paste – want to create advanced vector graphics? Use smart objects and jump between programs quickly.
- Want to quickly try comparing different looks from a section? Snapshot function.
- Want to perform an advanced photo/raster edit? It’s all there, no need to jump between programs and wonder what it will look like in the final product.
- PS Layers Panel: I’m not sure what’s wrong with Figma’s layers, but I always end up with a disorganized mess. I feel like the PS way of dealing with layers seems more conductive to better layer organization.
Once I find the final look, Figma is great for systematizing everything (components, variables). But at that point I’ve probably already switched to CSS.
