It wasn’t even two full weeks ago when Steven Asplund received the call to fill in for Guilherme Pat, who had to withdraw from week 5 from Dana White’s Contender Series against Anthony Guarascio. Although that is a dream for every hunter – including Asplund – in a typical “concrete” way, his thoughts were how he could use this to help others.
Once more than 500 pounds had weighed, ASplund used its access to MMA as a way to form itself and to have a little more to fight for. Now he wants to use this opportunity to help those in the same place he once was.
“I am just a fat child who has never given himself up, man,” said Asplund. “I would like to have this platform, I hope I can inspire a few people for God and I hope that a few people look at this trip and look at my story, good, well, if he can do it as his stupid ass, I can.”
However, it is not only for those who want to get rid of more from the bank. There are a whole series of family and friends where Asplund seems to bring home on Tuesday. Among them is his father, who himself had an incredible 30+ MMA career. It was still a big moment for the previously big man to tell the original “concrete” about this opportunity.
“I’m going to cry here, so don’t make me out of the end. But when I had to call my father and tell him that we came back to the UFC, I was an emotional call,” he said referring to his father’s long career, which had fought the regional scene for almost 16 years. “I can do this for us. It is not just my heart that is true. Like, of course I am here for me – this is something that I have to do for me. I evidence of myself that I can do this damn. I prove to anyone who I can do damn it.
Although reaching this point helps to honor his father and help others inspire, he knows that there is still one step. He has to take it home on Tuesday. With everything he fights for, he is convinced that nobody can take him out.
“I want the next fight what UFC Shorts can wear and I want to bring this shit back to my city and do this shit for my family. I want to give my daughter a better life. I want to give my wife a better life,” explained Asplund. “I know that Anthony has a lot of shit for whatever he does – we are all damn psychos.
You can catch that fight with Anthony Guarascio as part of week 5 of the Contender Series by Dana White this Tuesday. The fight will serve as the most important event on ESPN+ with the card from 8 p.m.
