Fritz currently leads the way when it comes to American tennis players, but most believe Shelton has the potential to dethrone him. Member of the Tennis Hall of Fame Steve Flink spoke about Shelton and Fritz’s season in a media interview, emphasizing that Shelton could have achieved even more success without the injury against Mannarino.
Coming back from injury is always demanding, but Shelton gave it his all, knowing he must overcome that barrier.
‘It’s true, him [Shelton] lost those matches to [Jannik] Sinner, Australia was a semi-final and Wimbledon a quarter, and he would probably be entering the same territory at the US Open had he not been injured. [Adrian] Mannarino with a terrible shoulder injury,” Flink said on the Court-Side with Beilinson Tennis YouTube Channel.
“That also really disrupted the end of his year. You could see he came back and you could see he was rusty and he wasn’t ready yet. They put some pressure in the end-of-year championships and didn’t give the best result. He did his best and played as best he could against that great field.”
Potential
Ultimately, Flink believes Ben has the potential to achieve more success next season, expecting he could win another Masters next year. If Shelton has his day, Flink has no doubt that Ben can win.
