Sheffield Steelers started their competition campaign in a emphatic way and scored six times to beat Dundee stars in the Utilita Arena.

“It is always nice to win your league opener, and I think there are no easy nights this year, so starting with a victory and two points is a good start,” said Steelers’ Evan Jasper, who scored his first goal in Orange in the win. “Every competition is important in this competition. You can’t win the competition in October, but you can certainly lose it. It was important to have a good mindset in this and to come up with a victory.”

The Steelers dominated the vast majority of possession and opportunities in the opening period, but it took them more than 15 minutes to get ahead. With Kris Inglis who served an oblique minor, Jordon Southorn shot out of the lock to open the score at 4:33 PM.

Dundee leveled eight minutes in period two when a turnover in the offensive zone allowed the stars to break 4-on-2. Jonathan McBean wiped a rebound from Justin Bean’s shot to bind the game.

If the visitors hoped that that goal would cause a change in Momentum, they would soon be disappointed. The Steelers restored their lead and then expanded it further when Jasper struck before Southorn added a second from the point to bring the score to 4-1.

“I was lucky tonight; you can’t do it all alone,” added Jasper, who ended the night with four points. “I found good chemistry with my line mates, and it was great to see everyone going. Our powerplay was buzzing and we made some really nice plays.”

Ryan Tait and Joona Huttula complete the score to put the Steelers 6-1 through the 48-minute marking while the home team rode to victory.

“We just were not good enough tonight, to be honest,” Jonathan McBean from Stars reflected. “We did not deserve the victory, and they did that. Special teams let us down tonight – they capitalized and we did not do that. It was good to get the equalizer, but things went downhill from there. I thought there might be a momentum shift, but we didn’t build on it.”
