Stacy Lewis, a 17-year-old LPGA veteran who won 13 times, including two large championships and supplied the American Solheim Cup team in 2023 and 2024, announced its retirement from Professional Golf on Wednesday.
The news was released on the social media accounts of Lewis prior to the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship of the LPGA, which Lewis will play for the 19th time this week. Lewis, an alum from the University of Arkansas and four-time all-American at the university, won the NW Arkansas Championship in 2014.
“Never in a million years, I would have thought that this trip Golf would still go in 2025, but the time has come to put the clubs away,” Lewis wrote. “I will finish the 2025 season, but this will be my last on the LPGA. I don’t know exactly what the next is, but I am so grateful for all Arkansas fans and people who have supported me [the] way!”
The first LPGA victory of Lewis was a major, the Kraft Nabisco Championship 2011 (now the Chevron Championship). She achieved 11 victories for the next three years, including a second major, the Ricoh Women’s British Open 2013. In 2013 she went up to World No. 1 – only became the second American to hold the first place in the ranking in the ranking. Her last two wins arrived in 2017 and 2020.
In 2018, the old sponsor of Lewis, KPMG, made the headlines when the company chose to pay Lewis the full value of her contract while she was on maternity leave – a groundbreaking decision that has become more mainstream since then.
Now 40 years old, Lewis said she is looking forward to spending more time with her husband and daughter retiring.
“I’m going to miss the LPGA Tour family and this part of my life, but my body told me it’s time,” she wrote. “My husband became a part of the team that was too suitable to seamlessly offer a great balance and stability for my life. I look forward to being more synchronous and have more time as a family.”
Lewis’ pension announcement makes her the latest controversial player to step away from the game and become a member of Brittany Lincicome, Lexi Thompson and therefore Yeon Ryu. You can read the full explanation of Lewis here.
