Interim Sporting Kansas City coach Kerry Zavagnin will think about tactical changes for Saturday’s matchup with the Colorado Rapids, after a heavy defeat of the previous time out.

Sporting was beaten 5-2 last week by the Seattle Sounders, a result that they are 13th late in the classification of the Western Conference.

They are 11 points on drift of the play-in spots with only seven regular seasonal matches to play, and 12 points back of the last automatic qualification place for the play-offs.

“We have to evaluate the players who come back to the group. A formation at the end of the day is only four songs,” said Zavagnin.

“It’s how we defend the goal, it’s how we own the ball and make efficient attacks in the future … That is what a balanced team is and that is what a complete team is.

“That is something we fought in the course of the season. Our focus is still no different than another week.

“Whether you lose 5-2 or win 3-0, it doesn’t really matter. You try to get better from Tuesday to get ready for the next opponent.”

Colorado is now seventh in the west and currently on track to make the play -offs.

The Chris Aras team was beaten 3-0 by De La Galaxy in their last MLS competition, however, after back-to-back victories on Minnesota United and Atlanta United.

Players to watch

Sporting KC – Dejan Jovljic

Joveljic scored 14 goals in MLS this season, at least eight more than any other sports player.

He also leads the charts of the club for Schoten (51) and shots on Target (30), although he was excluded from Seattle for the last time.

Colorado Rapids – Sam Vines

Vines completed all 43 passes that he tried against La Galaxy on Saturday, the fourth of a Rapids player in a competition since OPTA in 2010 Detailed Data collection started from MLS.

Since 2018, only Alex MaxSo (46/46 against the San Jose gestures in June 2023) has completed the same amount with 100% accuracy in a match for Colorado.

Match forecast – Sporting KC Win

Sporting Kansas City has won their last two meetings with Colorado, including a 2-1 victory on July 4.

They have not won three or more in a row against the Rapids in all competitions since they enjoyed a run of four games between 2012 and 2015.

Sporting has lost four straight matches, including a 5-2 defeat for the in-form Seattle Sounders last Sunday.

Since 2020 they have only had one longer loss of streak in all competitions, a run of 10 games from 2024 to 2025.

But home advantage makes them small favorites, especially because Colorado has only won one of their last 11 out-matches in all matches that goes back to April (D3 L7), a 2-1 victory over Minnesota United on August 10.

That victory on the wage is the only match at the time in which the rapids held their opponent to less than two goals.

Colorado Rapids – 32.7%

Drawing – 26.6%
