Sovereignty leaves for Del Mar on October 22

Godolphin’s Kentucky home bred Sovereignty recorded his last breeze in New York on October 19 before shipping to California for the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Sea November 1.

Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, Sovereignty was guided in work by assistant trainer Neil Poznansky on the Oklahoma Training Track at Saratoga Race Course. Starting something for the colleague Sea beach he kicked away powerfully in the stretch and finished a few lengths in front. The New York Racing Association clockers caught Sovereignty at five furlongs in 1:01.39.

“He looked good,” Mott said. “He’s not one of those horses that works and breaks the stopwatch. He’s got good, solid works, good, useful works, that’s nice of him. He does what he has to do and what you make him do.”

Sovereignty is expected to ship on October 22 and will shoot its final work on October 26 or 27 in Del Mar, according to Mott.

“I don’t have any reason to think he wouldn’t adapt quickly or well enough,” Mott said. “I’m going a little early. A lot of guys like to do their last bit of work and leave, and that’s fine. The only reason I want to go a few days early is travel issues, you know what I mean, just get it over with.”
