DEL MAR, Calif. – Shortly after the sun rose over Del Mar, winner of the Kentucky Derby on Monday morning Sovereignty went out on the track and did half a mile of work. He looked as solid and confident as ever and flew into the four furlongs: 49.80.

“He ran well, we were happy with him,” said trainer Bill Mott afterwards. “All the other trainers call it a maintenance job, so I think we can say so.”

Sovereignty arrived in Del Mar on Wednesday after shipping across the country. The son of Into Mischief has completed his share of the journey this year, from Florida to Kentucky and then to Saratoga, New York, where he has spent the last 24 weeks. During that time he won the G1 Belmont Stakes, the G2 Jim Dandy and the G1 Travers. This is his first time west of the Mississippi.

“It looks good,” Mott says when asked about the ship. “Nothing went wrong. We escaped unscathed.”

Sovereignty has been an impressive sight in the days leading up to today’s final work. The screws have been tightened and now we just have to wait and see the final days leading up to the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Saturday.

“We’ll be jogging and galloping,” Mott notes. “Just do enough to keep him happy.”
