Southernsunshine cruises to victory on Veterans Day

Driver Brett Miller and Southernsunshine (Pine nuts) overcame cold and windy conditions to withdraw from a full field of ten in the $18,000 condition to claim the trot on Veterans Day (November 11) at Hollywood Gaming at Dayton Raceway.

Miller pushed the six-year-old Pinetucky harness racing mare off the wings to open a three-length lead over A Blue Million (Luke Hanners) before the quarter in :27.1.

The wayward Southernsunshine saw off the first challenges from Big Boys Edge (Sam Widger) and Sure Did (Jeremy Smith) at half in:57.3 and three-quarters in 1:26.1.

Southernsunshine sealed the deal with a:29.3 final quarter, recording the 1.5-length victory over Sure Did in 1:55.4.

Big Boys Edge defeated a fast-closing La Lolita (Josh Sutton) for the show spot.

It is the tenth victory in his career for Stacey Van Huizen’s trainee.

The winner is co-owned by John Stoll and breeder Claude Powers.

At the $15,000 conditioned pace, Gonzo was just that after seizing the lead before halftime and riding to a 1 ¾ length score.

Fully A Dragon (Marvin Luna) took off first and sprinted past the quarter mile in:27.1.

Driver Tyler Smith helped the eventual winner off the rail as the field passed the grandstand for the first time.

Gonezo led after halftime in:56.2 and three quarters in 1:23.3.

The gambler’s choice deflected the second attempt of the pocket seat Fully A Dragon, running the timer at 1:53.

Lick Creek Stock Farm owns the second son of Lazarus N.

Jace Sundeen trains the winner of two consecutive competitions.

Driver Jeremy Smith ended the evening with four victories.
