Southampton has dismissed boss Will Still, with the club sitting in 21st place in the Championship after 13 games.
Southampton started this season with a hint of optimism after being relegated from the Premier League. The Saints were looking to rebuild their team and make the playoffs this season.
The appointment of highly rated boss Will Still to mastermind that rebuild, replacing Ivan Juric. However, Still and Southampton have not had a good start to their season, with the club currently sitting 21st in the Championship after thirteen games.
Beat against Preston North End meant the club had lost their last three games on Saturday, causing alarm among Southampton supporters. Most of the anger has been directed at the club’s owners, Sport Republic, but Still himself is not immune to criticism.
Now the owners have made a statement announcing the decision Still to dismiss. After the defeat to Preston, the Saints decided it was time to take action.
Ruben Martinez, Clement Lemaitre and Carl Martin have all also left the club. Under-21 Head Coach Tonda Eckert will take charge of the team on an interim basis, starting against QPR on Wednesday.
Southampton technical director Johannes Spors said: “Will is a great person who has given everything to improve his performance and results.
“Ultimately, that process took longer than any of us would have liked. By making a change now, we believe it gives us the best chance to turn things around this season and climb back up the rankings.
“I would like to thank Will, Ruben, Clement and Carl for their efforts and wish them all the best for the future.”
Will Still’s stint as Southampton boss
What next for Southampton?
Still’s struggle and now dismissal is a huge blow to Southampton and their project. They now have a huge decision to make about how to approach their next appointment.
After the failures of Russell Martin, who has already been linked with a return, and Juric’s poor spell in charge, Saints fans won’t have much faith in the club to get the next deal right. Because the club is also in such a bad position, they are not in the most desirable position.
The club will not be able to attract the same caliber of coaches as in the summer. The Saints may have to take a step back in their project on this next appointment.
Interesting timing from Southampton
Sack Still two games ahead in a week is a very interesting decision. When you consider that there’s a two-week international break coming up, the timing gets even weirder.
Interim boss Eckert must prepare for a clash with QPR in just three days. Assuming Southampton don’t make an appointment soon, Sheffield Wednesday come to St Mary’s the following Saturday.
