South -Africa: St Mary’s DSG Crowned Champions of Spar Kzn Schoolgirl Hockey Challenge

5 minutes, 3 seconds Read

St Mary’s DSG stuck their champion status when they claimed their seventh title at the Grand Finals of the Spar Kzn Schoolgirls Hockey Challenge on Sunday 27 July 2025.

They met St Anne’s Diocesan College for the third time in the final match of the Grand Finals since the start of the tournament in 2011. It was St Mary’s who prevailed because they both won earlier meetings in 2018 and 2019.

Setting the pace of the whistle dominated the hosts in the early stages, who pierced the visitor circle several times before they were correct. Kgabiso Marafo by St. Anne gave keeper St. Anne a shock just after three minutes of play, lay on the edge of her circle when a beautiful St Mary’s break clambered her. A shot from Rogue St Mary from the top of the D flew well wide from the goals, giving Marafo a lot of lighting.

Less than two minutes later, another wave found this time a piece from the right, found St Mary’s Tayte Stewart goals that go through the basic line. After a wall of defense, she screwed her in parallel on the line and looked frustrated at the almost perfect pass, not only the legs of the first defender, but then immediately rolled through the legs of the keepers and finally the legs of her own player, who was waiting next to the distant post.

A few seconds later, St Mary’s Georgia Short received the ball right in front of the goals. She wasted no time to quietly scoop the ball into the net and go up after a phenomenal structure of pressure through the home team.

When the rest approached, St. Anne deserved a short corner and the ball flew to the top of the D before he shot to the goals, to be stopped by the first defensive wave. Given a second chance, St Anne moved the ball to the right, beyond the first wave. Their attempt was blocked and when a chance of follow -up was offered to the attacking team, a determined St Mary’s keeper, Ziyanda Mchunu, kept it outside.

Mchunu, who had not seen much action throughout the weekend, was put to work for the entire weekend in the third minute of the second half to make a penalty stroke that was awarded to St Anne’s Holly Hofmeyer. Hofmeyer got brave on the spot, but unfortunately her attempt to get stuck, disappointing was flying directly to Mchunu, who easily sniffed the shot.

Standed by their attacking game, St Anne has set up a number of weaving attacks, but a strong defense of St. Mary’s did not allow their opponents to look for the level so desperately. St. Anne, who overcome in the very first Grand Finals, was refused a second victory in their fifth run for the trophy by a team that was entirely on the song from the start and defended their title Dapper.

The third place became a determined team that represents the Durban North region. Ashton International College, who returned after nine years, had a fairy -tale return and met Epworth School in third place.

This is the most successful run of a team that represents the Durban North area in the fifteen years of the tournament. Just before half-time, Ashton shot into a rocket during a short corner, buzzing to the left of the keeper, giving them the lead over excellent Epworth performance.

In Ashton’s three previous performances of the Grand Finals, they finished twice in 2015 and 2016, and ninth in their first performance in 2013. Epworth had a third place in their name in 2018 and a fourth place in 2019, and had to settle for another fourth place in their third performance.

The tournament is now going in hibernation, with the sixteenth year of the Spar Kzn Schoolgirls Hockey Challenge from the beginning of next year.
