Ethan Horvath returns to the United States for the next chapter of his club career.

The New York Red Bulls have agreed to a deal in principle to acquire Horvath from English side Cardiff City, sources close to the player confirmed to SBI. Horvath is expected to arrive in Harrison, New Jersey next week to complete the move.

The Athletic was the first to report that the Red Bulls were close to signing Horvath.

The 30-year-old was loaned out by Sheffield Wednesday in August after first-choice goalkeeper Pierce Charles suffered a serious injury that kept him out for almost four months. Horvath played sixteen games for the Owls and registered two clean sheets.

He also earned Man of the Match honors during Sheffield Wednesday’s EFL Cup win over Premier League visitors Leeds United last summer.

Horvath played for several clubs in Europe, including Sheffield Wednesday, Cardiff City, Nottingham Forest, Luton Town and Club Brugge. He played 36 games over two seasons for Cardiff City before being loaned out.

In total he has made 230 club appearances abroad.

Horvath remains a goalkeeping option for the U.S. Men’s National Team heading into the FIFA World Cup later this year. He has earned ten senior caps to date and will now work under former USMNT midfielder Michael Bradley, who was named the new Red Bulls head coach earlier this winter.
