On January 6, Manjrekar, while talking about Kohli, had stated that ODI cricket was easier for top-order batsmen than any other format. He said he was disappointed that Kohli took the easier route of continuing to play ODI cricket and leaving the red-ball format behind. Manjrekar had also added that the lack of attacking pitches in ODIs meant that batting was significantly easier in 50-over cricket than in Tests.
“A lot of people have asked me why I keep saying that ODI cricket is easy for top-order batsmen. Go back a few years in Indian cricket and look at the guys who opened for India in 50-over cricket for a long time. Those batters were middle-order batters in Test cricket. They were not very keen on opening in Test cricket or batting in the top three. They were very happy to play at number 4, 5, 6,” Manjrekar had shared.
“But one day they were almost desperate to bat in the top three and get open. Therein lies the answer to why I believe it is easy for top-order batsmen, because everyone is lining up to bat in the top three. The first advantage you get when you open in 50-over cricket or bat at No. 3, there is not four slips and a gully. And you know when a bowler runs in, he doesn’t really come in to get you out. He’s just trying to make sure you don’t get 10-15 runs per over,” he added.
