Well, if you’re a devoted Stranger Things fan, you’re probably done, or about to be done, with watching the four feature-length episodes of Season 5, Part 1, released on Wednesday. Who wants to spend time with family over the Thanksgiving holiday anyway?
Now we’re heading into the release of Stranger Things Season 5, Part 2, and if you thought we’d be heading into that release day (Christmas, December 25) completely blind, that doesn’t seem to be the case, as the showrunners are getting quite chatty about what’s to come.
The Duffer brothers give clear indications of what’s to come in Part 2. Among the highlights we now know (via Variety):
Explanation of Will’s powers: They trust him to be connected to the Hivemind. While it seemed like he was just using Elf-style telekinesis to crumble the half-gorgonians, that was actually because they were connected through Vecna’s hive mind. The Duffers say we’ll “see how far he can go.”
A ‘bloodier’ part 2: “I’ve said this before: the show is not ‘Game of Thrones,’ said Matt Duffer. “I hope it surprises people. But there is no Red Wedding, if that’s what you’re asking. That would be depressing.”
Vecna’s memories: The Duffers call this the “new Russia” storyline because it will involve fewer characters, namely Max and Holly. But it would still supposedly “integrate” with other storylines (it’s better, since the Russia storyline isn’t exactly one of the most beloved of the series).

The balance of power between Vecna and the Mind Flayer: them dodge the question of whether the Mind Flayer is the “true evil” seducing Henry, which means Vecna might not technically be the big bad here overall. This won’t be resolved in Part 2, but in the finale of Part 3, so don’t hold your breath for an answer to that on Christmas Day there.
I found the most useful part of this was the explanation of how Will’s powers actually work, as we only get a glimpse of how he kills half-gorgonians without much information about it. It has the ability to make him not overpowered, since he needs to be near the Hivemind for them to work at all, but also someone who can potentially put an end to this whole thing. I’d be surprised if he and Eleven weren’t working together.
I really don’t think the show should start killing off major characters to give us a “cool” finale. Granted, the show is known for its big kills, but usually that season introduces a new character who ends up being targeted for death. This has happened four times now. Could that be Holly this time? Or wait, what about Derek?
