The home base of a lively handloom and powerlone industry, Solapur supports nearly 50,000 employees through 12,000 powerlooms, 200 robber looms and 200 air beam molten. The city produces Chaddars, towels and napkins with an annual turnover of more than £ 1,600 crore, and the Terry towels are strongly present on the world market.
“Our Terry towel designs are unique to Solapur and have a global question. The rate will certainly touch us, but we will not give up,” said Raju Rathi, president of the Solapur Chamber of Commerce Industry and Agriculture.
Terry Towel Export
In 2024, Solapur Terry -towels worth £ 618 Crore exported, of which about £ 200 crore went to the US. These towels are supplied for use in hotel, medical and household in more than 60 countries. With the American market under pressure, the industry now wants to export to Israel, Australia, Sri Lanka and other destinations, while ticking the unused domestic market of India.
The industry also focuses its attention on the domestic market of India and looks opportunities in different states. With terry towels priced from just £ 50 each, manufacturers have trust in a strong demand outside Maharashtra. The most important competition, they acknowledge, comes from Ludhiana-made Terry-towels.
Trade unions of employees
Interestingly, trade unions and industrialists of employees have come together to take on the challenge. Union Leader Narsayya Adam said that the city will be united, and he will initiate a concrete dialogue between employees and industry to protect living and maintain growth.
“All industrialists have recently come together to discuss the way ahead. We are determined to protect our industry, our company, and especially, the livelihood of thousands of employees,” said Rathi.
He added: “We are a nation of 140 crore people, and we must be able to overcome such challenges.” In these uncertain times, Solapur takes decisive steps to resist the Trump rate and to ensure that the industry does not collapse for circumstances.
For Solapur, the Trump rate is not just a setback – it is a catalyst for diversification, adjust and to appear stronger on the world stage.
