Social media post indicates Patrik Laine acted before deadline

Despite only playing 57 games with the team, Patrik Laine’s time as a Montreal Canadien already feels like it’s nearing an end.

Injuries have plagued the Finnish winger over the past two seasons with the Habs, with some even wondering if he would be able to play in the red, white and blue again. While Laine appears to be closing in on a return, speculation about his future in Montreal has only increased following a recent social media post from his wife.

Just two days ago, Jordan Leigh Laine shared a video on Instagram hinting that the writing could be on the wall for her husband’s time in Montreal, hinting at a possible trade before the deadline.

Laine wrote:

“Traveling for away games while it’s your husband’s contract year and you’re mentally preparing for the trade deadline. POV waiting for the hockey gods to decide your family’s future.”

The 27-year-old Laine played only five games this season and recorded one point (an assist) in that period.

As mentioned, he is a pending UFA in the fourth and final year of the four-year, $34.8 million extension signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2022.

There isn’t much room for Patrik Laine in Montreal

A big reason why a Laine trade has always felt possible is his role – or lack thereof – even when healthy. He averaged just 12:36 of ice time in the five games he played to start the season, spending time on the fourth line.

Add to that the emergence of Alexandre Texier and the Canadiens’ desire to add a true second-line center, and it stands to reason that GM Kent Hughes could look to move Laine to give him better opportunities elsewhere.

It will be interesting to see who kicks the tires because when he is playing, Laine still has one of the best shots in the league and can provide real value to a team in need of goals.

The Pittsburgh Penguins, Carolina Hurricanes, Washington Capitals, Seattle Kraken, Utah Mammoth, San Jose Sharks and Chicago Blackhawks are among the teams that could use his scoring ability and also have the cap space to accommodate Laine’s hefty contract.
