SoCal in for more holiday rain. What you need to know about the timeline, evacuation warnings

Southern California should be prepared for rain, stormy conditions and possible evacuations from fire-damaged areas this week.

Residents can expect a rainy New Year’s Eve and day, with precipitation rates of a quarter inch to half an inch per hour forecast for Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

“The chance of a wet New Year’s Parade, including the night before, if people are camping before the parade, is extremely high, currently 80-90%,” the weather service said in a statement Monday evening. “The last wet New Year’s parade was in 2006.”

Timeline

Tuesday: Windy conditions; chance of rain at night.

Wednesday: The chance of rain increases during the day and at night.

Thursday: The storm height is from Wednesday night to Thursday night.

Friday: 10-12% chance of rain.

Saturday: More rain possible.

Evacuation warnings issued

  • Evacuation warnings go into effect Wednesday at 11 a.m. for areas affected by the Franklin and Palisades fires around Pacific Palisades, the Eaton fire in Altadena, the Canyon fire near Castaic, the Agua and Lidia fires near the Magic Mountain Wilderness Area, the Bridge fire near Wrightwood, the Sunset fire near West Hollywood and the Kenneth fire near Calabasas.
  • Residents are advised to gather family, pets and supplies and leave quickly if authorities ask them to leave.

Basics

  • This storm won’t be as intense as last week’s record-setting storm.
  • 1-3 inches are expected in the Los Angeles Basin; 3-5 inches in the foothills and mountains.
  • Wind gusts can reach 30 to 50 km/hour.
