Although it has only been done halfway, the 2020s have already been one of the most eventful decades in the history of Calgary Flames. From the highest peaks to the lowest lows, the franchise has had a roller coaster of emotions in the last five years. This is how a line-up from 2020 is stepping so far, so far.
Ahead
Johnny Gaudreau – Elias Lindholm – Matthew Tkachuk
There is a real argument that the above trio was the best even line of the NHL of the entire 21st century. It starts with Johnny Gaudreau. Its 115 points in 2021–22 is the second best single season in franchise history. In general, his 191 points in Calgary is in fourth place in the Flames in the 2020s, despite playing only 166 games in Calgary. His 1.15 points per match in the meantime all flames leads this decade and will most likely still be at the end of the decade
The third wheel of the top line, Elias Lindholm, was huge in 2021-22. In general, his 248 points and 105 goals are both the most under the flames to date, despite leaving the team in February 2024. His 0.84 points per game percentage This decade is currently third behind his two line sizes.
The last member of the trio, Matthew Tkachuk, is the Flames’ only other point-per game this decade so far, behind Just Gaudreau. His 104 points in 2021–22 naturally also scores as the second best season due to a flame in the 2020s behind Gaudreau, of course. In general, he is in fifth place of the flames in points this decade despite playing in just 166 games.
Johnathan Huberdeau -Nazem Kadri -anwrew Mangane
The flames of Johnathan Huberdeau has been disappointing in one word. That said, he is still one of the most important contributors of the 2020s so far. His 169 points and 0.7 points per match are both in sixth place of the flames this decade ahead. Given his current contract, there is a good chance that he is one of, if not the highest scoring flame of the 2020s when it is all said and done.
Nazem Kadri makes a claim for the best center of the Flames of the 2020s. His 198 points are already rank third under Flames ahead this decade, while his 0.8 points per game is in fifth place. His 75 points in 2023–24 is the best single season of the Flames this decade outside 2021-22. With at least 50 points in 2025–26, Kadri will be the highest scoring flame of the decade.
Coming the second line is Andrew Mangiapane. While his breakout 35-goal, 2021–22 season was an out of a bit, he was still one of the most reliable wing players in the team of the 2020s before being treated in 2024. The Broodman registered this decade 93 goals in Calgary, which is still the most due to some other flame than Lindholm.
Blake Coleman – Mikael Backlund – Tyler Toffoli
Blake Coleman signed with the flames in 2021 and has since become a staple in the line -up. His 323 games played in Calgary This decade are in second place behind only Mikael Backlund. Although he has never been a big producer, he is just as reliable as they come and he was a large part of the 2021-22 season of the Flames.
In the middle is of course Backlund. No flame has played this more games in Calgary for decade than 404 from Backlund. His 226 points are also in second place behind only Lindholm. Although his Prime has passed him against this decade, Backlund is still a large part of the identity of the Flames, and he has been their captain since 2023.
On the right I have Tyler Toffoli. Acquired on the deadline during the 2021-222 season, Toffoli’s time in Calgary was short but impactful. Everyone remembers where they were when Toffoli made his debut for the flames in 2021-22. He followed that by leading the flames in the scoring in 2022–23 with 73 points. It is a pity that he could no longer linger.
Connor Zary – Yegor Sharangovich – Matthew Coronato
The simplest choice of the remaining options was Matthew Coronato. The first round pick of the Flames in 2021, Coronato, broke out last season with 24 goals and 47 points. After signing an extension of six years and looking good on the way to star, there is a good chance that Coronato will be considered one of the best players of the Flames of the 2020s when the decade is over.
Although he has only been around for two years, Yegor Sharangovich is already one of the more impactful flames of the 2020s, so strange that it may sound. His 91 points are the 11th most under forwards this decade, while his 48 goals are the 10th most. I hope he bounces back next season.
Finally, Connor Zary finish the fourth rule. He only played in 117 games and placed this for decade 61 points, but he is easily one of the more dynamic flames that the team had in the 2020s. Just like Coronato, chances are that he will be a lock on this selection by 2030.
Defenders
Mackenzie Weegar – Rasmus Andersson
Although he has only been here since 2022, it is fair to say that Mackenzie Weegar is the best defender of the Flames of the decade to date. With 130 points in 244 games played, he is already the third highest scoring defender of the decade, only 18 points from the second. Since he has been on his current contract for six years, chances are that he will lead the flames in most major defensive categories when the decade is ready.
The longest regular defender of the Flames of the decade, Rasmus Andersson’s 404 games played in Calgary, are 104 more than the next defender. He also leads all defenders in points with 201. Where he places in this team towards the end of the decade, given his current situation, but for now he is an easy choice on the top combination.
Noah Hanifin – Chris Tanev
Noah Hanifin has played more matches in Calgary for this decade than which defender is not mentioned Annnerson, logging in 298. He is also in second place for points with 148. He was never a star player, but Hanifin was a staple in the top four of the Flames until he was treated in 2024. After the coming season, however, Weegar caught up with both categories.
There is a reasonable argument that Chris Tanev was the best defender of the Flames at its peak. Tanev, a pure closing defender, was the heart and soul of the defense of the flames while he was here. In general, 259 games were played in Calgary in third place of only Andersson and Hanifin.
Nikita Zadorov – Lever Kylington
Nikita Zadorov had no high expectations when he came to Calgary in 2021, but he developed a solid defender in Calgary for a while and a favorite with fans. His 177 games played in Calgary and 49 points are both the fifth most this decade.
It is a pity that we have never seen Oliver Kylington from 2021-22. The defender looked good on his way to a long-term house in the top-four of the Flames before taking an extensive leave in 2022.
Goalkeepers
Jacob Markstrom – Dustin Wolf
After signing the team in 2020, Jacob Markstrom dominated the time in the fold of the Flames until he was finally treated in the summer of 2024. In general, his 105 victories are this decade 58 more than the next best goalkeeper, and his 212 games played are 122 more. He also finished second for the Vezina trophy in 2022.
Although he has only been the starter for only one season, Dustin Wolf is already the second best goalkeeper of the Flames of the decade. He is in third place for games played and wins this for decade, and it is only a matter of time before he passes Markstrom in both categories.
