Smuggling racket busted in Maharashtra, areca nuts worth Rs 25 crore seized

The Central Goods & Services Department (CGST) on Saturday busted a racket allegedly involved in smuggling of the banned and carcinogenic areca nuts in Maharashtra’s Raigad district from Indonesia. The officials seized 11 trucks coming from Mangaluru to Kolad via RORO (roll on roll out) railway wagon, containing 300 kg of areca nuts worth Rs 300 crore.

It is expected that the consignment would go from Raigad to Nagpur in Maharashtra and then was about to be distributed through multiple channels for tobacco production (gutkha and pan masala). The officials came to know that the GST certification for this consignment was used in the name of a Mangaluru-based individual from an owner called ND Traders. As further investigations progressed, it was revealed that the owner belongs to a low-income group and earns barely Rs 10,000 in a month.

The seizure could lead to Sameer Khan and Kader Khan, the alleged masterminds behind the smuggling racket. These two persons are said to have smuggled the areca nuts from Indonesia to Tutigudi in Kerala and then sent them to Mangaluru for polishing. Further, these nuts were loaded on trucks and put on RORO railway wagons to Raigad and then expected to reach Nagpur by road.

This is a pattern of smuggling low-quality areca nuts into the country. The nuts are smuggled into the country from Indonesia and then polished with carcinogenic chemicals in Mangaluru godowns, and then illegally distributed across the country, causing a cancer epidemic. In recent years, agencies like CBI, ED, CGST and others have cracked down on these smuggling frauds several times, resulting in a reduction in these incidents.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has also started investigating the case under sections of the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSS), 2006. The FDA officials have asked the CGST to share updates if anyone lands in its office in connection with the latest case. They have also asked the CGST to inform them before releasing any vehicle.

Moreover, it has issued strict instructions that no substandard quality of areca nuts should be released into the market.
