Mandhana started the match needing just 27 runs to reach the milestone. Heading into the match, she had scored 9,972 runs in 279 international matches across Tests, ODIs and T20Is. With this achievement, she joins an elite list consisting of Mithali Raj (10,868 runs), Suzie Bates (10,652) and Charlotte Edwards (10,273). Mandhana is now the second Indian woman, after Mithali Raj, to cross the 10,000-run mark in international cricket.
India entered the match having already concluded the five-match T20I series 3-0. Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu won the toss and opted to bowl, hoping the dew would aid the chase later in the evening. Mandhana opened the innings alongside Shafali Verma and started brilliantly, allowing her partner to play the aggressive role. India raced through the powerplay and scored 61 runs without loss in the first six overs. Mandhana achieved her historic achievement by pushing a full performance towards long-on to achieve her 10,000th international run.
By the end of the 10th over, India had reached 85 without loss, with both openers well set. Mandhana was unbeaten on 37 off 31 balls, hitting six boundaries, while Shafali Verma continued her dominant run with 48 off 29 deliveries. The opening score had already passed fifty, which gave the hosts a big advantage in the match.
