The Tasmanian Standardbred Breeding – Industry continues to put well above its weight, with the year -old sales of the state – now under the banner of Nutrien Equine – Produce the results of the head of the cable tree, both in the sales ring and on the circuit.

Sales Graduate Hungry Hippo

Since Nutrien took the reins a few years ago, the sale has seen strong averages, a series of racing track winners and the extra incentive of the first victory bonus of Tasracing for graduates, who rewards every yearly that was purchased with extra Prizemoney when they score their first victory.

A radiant example of the success of the sale is hungry hippo, by exciting young stallion Stay hungry From Ashuras Beau. Fredted locally by Brooke Hammond, the Colt was offered during the 2023 Nutrien Tasmanian Yearling Sale and sold for $ 41,000 to race Bloodstock and Aaron Bain Racing. Fast forward to now, and he remains unbeaten from two starts, his last victory comes over Launceston on Sunday evening.

The sale has also been a launch path for other winners:
• In 2024, two yearlings shared the highest honor of $ 35,000. Lot 7, A Culgrify US – Weona Badgirl Colt offered by Richard Hall, was purchased by Ben Yole Racing and has already broken through for a victory in Launceston. Lot 23, A Captain Crunch – Covered Fier Merrieveeulen of the Melissa Maine design, was purchased by Ashwood Racing Stables and scored impressively on her only start to now at Mildura.
• In 2025 a new benchmark was set when one Downby theseaside Merrieveeulen from bad nights raised $ 65,000 – the highest price so far since Nutrien took over the sale. Offered by Brooke Hammond, she was secured by N40 Racing & Michael Brennan Racing and will race in Tasmania in Tasmania during her youth season.

By the figures:
• 2023 Average: $ 16,056
• 2024 Average: $ 20,893
• 2025 average: $ 18,023

While the average of 2025 fell slightly from the peak of 2024, it remains comfortable above the basic line of the pre-Nutrien. The question has been encouraged by the improved presentation of the sale, which has also shifted from Carrick Park Paceway to Quercus Park and tuning with the thoroughbred sales location of the state.

Stewart Brown, the lead of Tasracing’s Harness Code, said: “We would like to try to get songs up to those 30 points – now we have locked up in Quercus Park, there is enough room to house more yearlings.”

Mark Barton from Nutrien added: “Tasmania is a boutique sale, and I think about 30 yearlings would go about the right number for the state to support.

Tasracing and Nutrien also work closely together to attract buyers from the Interstate. When asked about the move from Carrick Paceway to Quercus Park, Barton said: “It’s good because we can use the Magic Millions facilities, and it’s not that hard to get from the airport.”

The Tasmanian sale distinguishes itself from other auctions, which is mainly managed by tasracing and breeders a rare deal-no admission prices, no committee costs and no purchasing backs. Moreover, graduates are eligible for a $ 5,000 bonus for their first victory as a two -year -old.

Brown confirmed that the schedule will continue in 2026, saying: “Absolutely it is very popular. We have three current two-year-olds who have won all that bonus this year.”

The results – both in the sales ring and the circuit – indicate a bright future for Tasmanian breeding, with the Nutrien platform, strong local breeding involvement and the bonus schedule of Tasracing that combines to keep quality year and competing returns that flow year after year.

With nominations for the sale of 2026 only recently open, Brown said that the interest was already promising: “Good – we had a few there at this early stage. Undoubtedly, we will undoubtedly build the closer to the closing date, September 26.”

He encouraged breeders to get involved early, and added that with Quercus Park now firmly established as the location, there is room for more quality yearlings than ever before.
