Arne Slot expressed his frustration at Liverpool’s tight schedule after admitting his players lacked energy during a dramatic 3-2 Premier League defeat at Bournemouth.

Cherries winger Amine Adli scored a winner with virtually the final kick of an enthralling match that sparked wild celebrations at the Vitality Stadium.

The Reds, who won 3-0 in the Champions League in Marseille on Wednesday evening, looked set to escape wet and windy Dorset with a fifth consecutive top-flight draw after Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai canceled out Evanilson and Alex Jimenez’s goals.

“Conceding a goal is always frustrating, but especially when there is no time left to get back into the game,” said Liverpool boss Slot after Adli struck in the fifth minute of extra time.

“But they could also have made it 3-2 a little earlier. After we scored at 2-2, we still tried, but I think it’s safe to say that a few of our players ran out of energy.”

“And I can’t even criticize them for that, because two days ago (three) we had to play an away game.

“We are the only team that has played the Champions League and has two days in between. This time after an away match, another away match against one of the most intense teams in the competition and I mainly play with the same players because of the players we have available.”

“What should not have happened is that you ultimately have to win, because that is more difficult. You saw that in the last ten minutes.”

“The rest of the game was completely different, we dominated the game.”

Arne Slot says Liverpool only have themselves to blame

Reigning champions Liverpool remain fourth – 14 points behind leaders Arsenal – but could end the weekend in eighth place.

A misjudgment from captain Van Dijk led to Alex Scott teeing up Evanilson for Bournemouth’s opener in the 26th minute.

The Reds were temporarily down to ten men when Jimenez claimed the Cherries’ second place seven minutes later, with substitute Wataru Endo still waiting to replace the injured Joe Gomez, who collided with goalkeeper Alisson Becker while trying to block the first goal.

“I don’t think it’s fair to Virgil to blame him for the first goal because you could see throughout the match how much impact the wind had on certain balls,” Slot said.

“He was not the only one who occasionally suffered from the wind.

“Of course the second one was when we only had 10.

“Maybe that sums up our season. It’s something different every time, it’s something special every time how we give in, but we give in. The only guilty one is ourselves.”
