Slot makes ‘worst’ Liverpool admission about Brentford’s defeat

Arne Slot could not avoid another poor performance from Liverpool in the Premier League, as the team lost 3-2 at Brentford.

The visitors fell behind for the sixth time in a row in all competitions when Dango Ouattara gave the Bees an early lead after a long throw.

Kevin Schade doubled the lead towards the end of regular time before Milos Kerkez gave Liverpool a shot in the arm with his first goal for the club on the stroke of half-time.

Brentford were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area when Virgil van Dijk kicked the underside of Ouattara’s foot, but a VAR check showed this happened on the line. Igor Thiago stepped up to convert the penalty.

Mo Salah thundered a brilliant strike from the crossbar to give the Reds hope of pulling away from a point, but they could not find an equalizer despite lengthy stoppage time.

Slot felt his side were miles off that evening as Brentford came away with a deserved 3-2 victory, with just two points separating the teams in the Premier League.

“The performance was not that good,” Slot told TNT Sports. “Maybe apart from the 20-25 minutes in the first half. We were already 1-0 down at that point, but at that point in those 20-25 minutes I thought the result was possible.”

“From the rest of the game, looking at the way we played and the way Brentford played, I don’t think it was ever in the game that we were going to get a result.”

Liverpool have lost their last four top-flight games in a row, becoming the first team in the Premier League to do so, after winning their first five games. Slot believes this was the worst of their recent defeats.

“You can’t compare them all, but the most worrying thing is losing four times in a row. Then you can judge the performance and today in my opinion was the worst of all four. Again, conceding a set-piece and not scoring one makes it difficult to win a game of football.”

Asked why it was worse than the others, Slot explained: “We didn’t do the basics well in the first half and parts of the second half. They won more matches than us, they won more second balls than us and when you come here and you know if you’re conceding goals, one of them could be a set-piece and counter-attacking is also one of their biggest strengths and that’s how we conceded two goals.”

“I’m not sure if the referee would have given them the penalty but it turned out to be an inside shot. After being 3-1 down we tried and made some substitutions but if I’m completely honest it was more likely that they would score at that moment than us making it 3-2.”
