Liverpool -Manager Arne Slot has made jokes that Jamie Carragher’s comments about the openness have helped to strengthen their defense against Arsenal.
The champions moved to the top of the Premier League table with a 1-0 win over Arsenal in Anfield. Dominik Szoboszlai scored the only goal of the game at 83 minutes and shoots a fantastic free kick home from a distance.
The Reds also registered a first clean slate of the season, after they had given four goals on their opening victories against Bournemouth and Newcastle.
After the former victory, ex-Liverpool defender Carragher was critical of the overring on the side to push players ahead, after Bournemouth scored during the break.
Assessment of the victory over Arsenal, Slot said that the comments of Carragher have led to a change in approach.
“If you win against a team like Arsenal, which was such a good team last season and strengthened so much, it is very positive to win against them. At the end of the season we will know what it is worth,” said the Dutchman, speaking with Sky Sports.
‘Listening to Jamie [Carragher]. He thought we were far too open against Bournemouth, so we thought we had a boring game. On a more serious note they took the risk of going 1v1, this was difficult because they brought all midfielders so close to the defense.
“Then we went 1v1 in the second half, but with Szoboszlai who played close by and three midfielders. In the second half we pressed very well, so for me we got the upper hand after 45 minutes. In the end we needed a moment of magic.”
