Manchester United’s latest 3-2 win against Fulham at Old Trafford on Sunday was their third successive victory under Michael Carrick.
The interim head coach appears to have brought back the United DNA of yesteryear, and the manner in which Benjamin Sesko scored a Fergie time-winner will have pleased any fan.
The ‘never-say-die’ attitude, a hallmark of the great United teams of old under Sir Alex Ferguson, has led to the Red Devils’ victories against league leaders Arsenal, their rowdy neighbours, Manchester City and now the Cottagers.
Players know that if they are not part of the starting XI, they still have a chance to make an impact from the bench, as Matheus Cunha and Sesko have shown.
Joshua Zirkzee is excited to play under Carrick
Naturally, many players are excited about playing under the legendary midfielder, with Joshua Zirkzee being one of them according to the club website.
“Yes, I can’t wait. Especially after watching the game against City and seeing the boys play the way they did, it just makes you want to be on the pitch and help the team.”
“So I’m really looking forward to being with the boys again.”
The Dutchman, who rarely started under former head coach Ruben Amorim, has been linked with an exit in the January window.
Injury problems behind him
Juventus and AS Roma are among his suitors, but Carrick had his departure blocked. And these comments all but confirm that he won’t be leaving on deadline day.
The 24-year-old was left out of the matchday squad for both the derby win and against the Gunners due to injury.
It was frustrating for the former Champions League winner as it was a great opportunity to catch the attention of the new head coach.
“I feel good. It’s always frustrating [to get injured] but it is what it is and you can’t change it. So you just have to keep moving forward and that’s what I’m doing now.”
Impressed with Carrick’s playing style
The Dutch international was part of the squad for the match against Fulham and saw first-hand how much things have changed under Carrick.
Working together, both with and without the ball, United look like a different team than they did in the Amorim era.
Joshua Zirkzee revealed this, citing his teammates’ hard work in the Manchester derby to prove his point.
“I really enjoyed the performance. I’m sure I’m not the only one. It was the little moments. I don’t know, we just looked very hungry.”
Now his minutes are under Carrick
“Attacking, defending, everything was just there for us. We just gave what was expected of us on derby day, so it was just fun to watch.”
The former Bologna star hopes to feature against Tottenham Hotspur next weekend, at least as a substitute, if not from the start.
