Saudi Arabian clubs are planning big moves in the transfer market this summer in a bid to continue the expansion of the domestic league. According to Saudi Arabia, a ‘transfer purge’ after the World Cup is in the plans talkSPORT.
There are a number of Premier League players on the list of 50 top-age foreign players to be signed this summer.
At the top of the wish list is Mohamed Salah, after previous failed attempts to sign the winger. Al-Ittihad saw a £150million bid rejected by Liverpool in 2023, but a renewed attempt could seal a deal this time.
Salah’s reduced production this season and problems with Arne Slot earlier in the campaign could lead to a move away from Anfield, should a suitable offer materialise. He is under contract with Liverpool until 2027.
Bruno Fernandes is another priority player for the SPL. Saudi sides were willing to spend around £100 million on the Manchester United midfielder last summer, but Fernandes rejected the approach to stay at Old Trafford. He later said he felt ‘hurt’ by United’s willingness to negotiate his sale.
“I decided not to go [to Saudi Arabia]not just for family reasons, but because I really liked the club,” said Fernandes.
“From the club I felt: ‘If you go, it’s not that bad for us’. It hurts me a little. More than pain, it makes me sad. I’m a player who has nothing to point out. I’m always available, I always give the best of myself.”
It is unclear whether his stance on Saudi Arabia has softened, although it is expected that Fernandes would prefer to remain in Europe if he were to leave United this summer.
Other names of interest to the SPL include upcoming free agent Casemiro, who has announced he will not renew his contract with Manchester United.
Aston Villa duo Amadou Onana and Youri Tielemans and Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli have also been named as targets.
