Jannik Sinner escaped his first sticky situation of the 2025 US Open in style on Saturday afternoon in New York.

The number 1 in the PIF ATP ranking was given a strict test by Denis Shapovalov in Arthur Ashe Stadium, but after saving a breaking point to prevent 0-4 in the third set, the sinner was called in to a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 victory. The Italian was usually clinical in Engineering, a dramatic mid-match shift in the Momentum, including him who won the nine consecutive games to make a potential upset in a ultimately comfortable third round victory.

“It was a very tough competition today,” Sinner said in his interview on the entire country. “I have known Denis for a while, so I knew that I would have to play at a high level today. I am very happy that I was able to win in it. He started very well. I just tried to stay mentally there.”

Sinner, who dropped no more than three games in a single set about his first two rounds at Flushing Meadows, won 12 of the last 15 games against Shapovalov to extend his winning series to Hard-Court Majors to 24 games. With his three-hour, 12 minutes of triumph, the 24-year-old man won 20 games in all four Grand Slam tournaments after Rafael Nadal, Boris Becker and Novak Djokovic.

“Week two is completely different. You see fewer people behind the scenes. That is always a great sign that I am still there,” said Sinner, look forward to his fourth round meeting with Tommy Paul or Alexander Bublik. “It becomes physically and mentally more difficult and harder. It is clearly a special place for me. The first time I played the main table in a Grand Slam was here, and I won last year.”

The 27th placed Shapovalov made an impressive start of Saturday’s third round collision, but he was unable to prevent as soon as he let his third set lead slide. The Canadian victory was undermined by its nine double errors, including three in a single match for crucial Sinner a break for 4-3 in the third set.

Although it was not his clean-hiting best for a large part of the first half of the game, the way Sinner increased his level to close his victory was emphatically. He laid the foundation with his portion: the 20-time champion at Tour level won 84 percent (54/64) points behind his first serve overall on his way to the leveling of his Lexus ATP Head2head series with Shapovalov on 1-1.

Now 34-4 for the season, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, Sinner takes on a 14th seed Paul or 23rd Seed Biblik on Monday for a quarter-final place. Apart from Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated the Sinner three times in 2025, Biblik is the only other man who won against the Italian in 2025: the Kazakhstani has Sinner in three sets on the Halle grass in June.

The first victory of Roger Federer in 200, who wants to become the first player to defend the Singles title of the US Open Men’s, has also kept his hope of Sinner’s hope for the remaining world no. 1 alive after the US Open. He must surpass Alcaraz at the New York Major to prevent the Spaniard from living back the top spot.
