In an interview with The National34-year-old Halep shared the reasons why she decided to leave tennis.
Although she previously thought about ending her career, the match against Lucia Bronzetti was an additional reason for her to make a decision earlier and realize that her body could no longer withstand the same efforts.
Simona Halep reveals that she has never had a dilemma about whether she made the right decision, knowing that she was doing the best for herself at the time.
“I thought long and hard about when I would make the decision, when I would play my last match, but I certainly didn’t decide when I walked onto the field that day to meet Lucia.
I just felt like my place was no longer there. I felt physically very far away, I had pain in my knee and I could still feel it. After I lost the first set, I made a decision and said, ‘I’m going to quit after this.’ Then I went to my parents and told them I wanted to quit. They saw it as a good thing, that’s the story, but the reality is no one knew.”– she said
Halep’s decision
Perhaps other tennis players could follow her example, as she was considered one of the best in the world for many years. However, when injuries become a daily occurrence and you feel a lot of pain on the field, it is definitely time to say goodbye.
Simona Halep has done the best for herself and the question is whether she will remain involved in the tennis world in another way – as a coach or as a member of a tennis organization. It seems that these are not her ambitions at the moment, but Halep closely follows developments in the sport and watches them with pleasure.
