SILVER FOR GB AFTER 2-1 WIN OVER ROMANIA – Ice Hockey UK

Great Britain secured the silver medal at the Men’s Under-20 World Championship Division II Group A in Bucharest with a 2-1 win over Romania on the penultimate day of the tournament.

Korea won gold and were promoted with one match to go with an 8-1 win over relegated Spain, while Romania, Croatia and China continue to battle for the bronze medal on the final day.

GB netminder Ben Clarke-Leach made 38 saves in another impressive performance.

Neat link-up play between Edgars Vengis and Kyle Carruth saw Brynley Capps put GB ahead with a neat finish from the end (04:35).

Clarke-Leach turned away eight shots in the first period, including a great save from Robert Szekeres.

Bailey Yates cut across the top of the left circle to the slot and fired the puck past Calin Mardale (25:05) for the only goal of the second session.

Alpar Kovacs was the first to respond to a rebound and scored from the slot on his backhand to reduce Romania’s deficit to one (52:51).

Romania brought on netminder Mardale for the extra skater, but GB held on for their third win in four games.

There is no action tomorrow before GB take on China in their final match of the tournament on Saturday (January 10). The showdown is at 12:30 (10:30 GMT).
