Tonight, Sidney Crosby, captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, just won Mario Lemieux’s record for points in the Penguins franchise. By scoring two points tonight, he has now reached 1,724 points. The equalizer came earlier in the day against the Montreal Canadiens. He added an assist later in the first period.
It’s a great record because Mario Lemieux was one of the best players in the history of hockey, and that certainly puts Crosby as one of the best.
Crosby’s legacy grows every season
Crosby has done everything you could possibly want in the NHL. He has been a generational player since he was drafted in 2005. He played his entire career with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He already holds the record as the all-time leader in assists, and he has played in more games than any other Penguins player. Now 37, in his 21st season in the NHL, he won the Stanley Cup in 2009, 2016 and 2017. He also won the Hart Trophy in 2007 and 2014.
He now sits eighth on the all-time NHL points list, just 31 points shy of Steve Yzerman for seventh. Crosby’s legacy is growing. Pierre LeBrun writes: “If you think back to 2005, after the lockout and the push for 87 (and 8) to help reset the NHL, Sidney Crosby has blown away expectations that at first seemed unrealistic. And he has been a perfect ambassador for the game on and off the ice.”
Congratulations to him for breaking Mario Lemieux’s record with the Penguins.
