India lost the match against South Africa, marking their fourth home Test loss since Gautam Gambhir took over as head coach. This loss marks their third loss in the ongoing WTC cycle and has pushed them to 4th position on the WTC points table.
Shubman Gill to miss Guwahati Test?
The Indian skipper played just three balls on Day 2 before leaving the field holding his neck while suffering from spasms. The Indian captain, who did not take the field in the two Indian innings, is a doubt for the second match.

Meanwhile, head coach Gautam Gambhir gave an update on Gill after the end of the first Test, saying he is currently under assessment and they will soon call for his participation in the next match.
“He is still under assessment, so let’s see. The physios will call today evening. And we will call tomorrow,” said Gautam Gambhir when asked if Shubman Gill would travel with the team.
Rishabh Pant’s return is in vain
Rishabh Pant, the veteran Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, returned to the Indian team after being dismissed from the last match against England at the Oval. He suffered a fracture to his right leg and therefore missed the series against West Indies.
Pant made a comeback into the Indian team after some good performances for India A as he pushed half-centuries in each of the two matches. Pant was included in the first Test and achieved a milestone for India with the most Test sixes for India.
He scored 27 runs in the first innings and was dismissed for just 2 runs in the second. India expected at least a cameo from their veteran batsman to propel them towards the modest target, but Pant could not be of much use, nor could Dhruv Jurel, who had also been promoted higher up.
Who could replace Shubman Gill for the second Test if he fails to return from injury?
Shubman Gill may miss the upcoming match against South Africa and will therefore have to be replaced by two of the batters who were on the bench in the Indian dugout. Shubman Gill, who usually bats in the middle order, has to be replaced by another player.
Sai Sudharsan or Devdutt Padikkal are likely to replace Gill in the Indian Playing XI, and Rishabh Pant would then be seen as the captain of the Indian squad. He is the vice-captain of the Indian side and captained them during the second South African innings.
The Guwahati Test will be played at the Guwahati Cricket Stadium from November 22 and the final call to Gill will take place tomorrow.
