Rohit Sharma’s long-cherished dream of lifting the ODI World Cup for India may have finally slipped away. The veteran opener, who played a leading role in 2019 and the team led in 2023, will no longer lead the side if Shubman Gill has been named India’s new ODI skipper.

Rohit was the striking artist of India at the 2019 World Cup under the captain of Virat Kohli, scored five centuries and ended as the best runter for the tournament. Four years later he came painfully close to fulfilling his dream as a captain, only for India for a shortage in the final of 2023 against Australia.

Now that the World Cup cycle of 2027 starts, the baton is transferred to Shubman Gill. The 24-year-old will start his ODI Captainincy trip from 19 October with the Drie-Match Series against Australia.

“It’s a big thing to lead your country in ODIs, and the party did well. We have 20 odis before we play the World Cup. The players will do their best, and hopefully we will be ready for the World Cup. That’s the ultimate dream,” Gill told BCCI.

The record of Rohit as ODI captain remains impressive with 42 victories in 75 games and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 title emphasize his leadership.

Main selector Ajit Agarkar explained the timing behind the leadership change. “Whether it was or six months later, those are the calls we have to accept. It is difficult as far as ODIs are concerned, and if you want to make a decision, you have to make it early to allow a new man to lead the confidence in a different size,” he said.

While there are questions about whether Rohit will play until the next World Cup, his impact on Indian Cricket is out of doubt. For now, a new chapter starts with Shubman Gill that leads the ODI trip from India to 2027.
